Do's
- Do wet both your hair and the bar first, water is what activates it and gets the lather going.
- Do work up a lather in your hands (treat it a bit like a soap bar), or rub the wet bar gently onto your head, then massage it in.
- Do focus on your scalp, not the lengths, that's where the oil and build-up actually are and cleaning it well is the whole job.
- Do go in for a second round if you don't feel properly clean first time, lather, massage, rinse, repeat. It's normal, especially on wash day.
- Do let the bar dry out between washes (a draining dish or a spot out of the stream) a dry bar lasts far, far longer.
Don'ts
- Don't expect instant bottle-style foam, a bar needs a moment to react with the water before it lathers. Patience for ten seconds.
- Don't scrub the bar down the lengths of your hair, the lather rinsing through cleans those; dragging it along just wastes product and roughs up the cuticle.
- Don't panic during the first week or two, if your hair feels different as you switch, your scalp is recalibrating after years of liquid shampoo, not breaking.
- Don't leave the bar sitting in a puddle, a bar left in the damp really does go mushy and disappears fast.
- Don't write it off after one wash. Give it a couple of weeks to settle in, first impressions of a bar aren't the full story.
